The only drawback is the cable is not long enough, so plan on buying an extension cable or two.After buying similar antennas and extension cables on ebay, I have found that name brand components was well worth the extra cost (the cheaper ones from ebay never seem to work for me). I bought the ANT-0400 on sale at Fry's, and found it very good for both desktops with a PCI wireless card and for routers that I had trouble placing.
You can run this from the router or off of your network card and it works great both ways
If it were not for this I would give the antenna a full 5 stars in this review.I am very pleased with this, and would recommend it to anyone looking to increase their wireless experience at an affordable cost. My only compliant is that some might need a longer extension wire, but I am fortunate in that I do not. In order to extend it you will need to get creative. I lost my old Antenna in a move I made, and finally found an inexpensive replacement here. I found this especially true if your current setup is under-performing for your networking needs, you have a tight budget, and you don't need a longer wire between the antenna base and your computer. I have better range and the data transfer rate is much better now than your standard anetenna that comes with most PCI wireless cards from my own experience. It was on a heavy discount so I was a bit nervous when I first made the purchase, but I am very pleased with it's performance so far. It also has the ability to be mounted up against a wall, and it also has a magnetic base so it can stick to a metal surface and you don't have to worry about it falling over.
It's also aesthetically pleasing, for those who are going to have it prominently displayed on their desk.The only drawback is that it has a 4' cable that is permanently attached to the base, so that it can't be replaced with a longer cable, so extension cords are needed for very creative placement. This antenna increased the signal strength of my desktop's wireless card by 20 dBm. This is partly due to the gain, and partly due to the ability to place it in a better location than a normal antenna.For those frustrated with a desktop disconnecting from wireless because the antenna is stuck behind the computer itself, this is a great solution.
